Raven’s Jig – You Were There (off-vocal)

If this song from the video game Ico reminds you of FMA’s Bratja, don’t be surprised – they were both composed by Michiru Oshima, whose music we appreciate dearly. This specific song, however, was chosen by hit Utaite Kanipan, as part of the second collaboration we did together. In Better Together, this piece, featuring original English lyrics by Agathe, serves as closure to an album that opened with Bratja, bringing harmony to the whole mix.

Raven’s Jig – Better

This is our most recent collaboration with Seventh Element to date, an arrange of his composition Better, featuring powerful drums by Vincent Ramaekers. We decided to keep this version off vocal so as not to compromise the instruments, and because, quite simply, we were not sure how to go about it… Fun fact number one: this is the only song which we played which has a pentatonic scale instead of a heptatonic scale. Fun fact number two: the title, Better, would later inspire the name of our first album, Better Together.

Raven’s Jig – El Niño (Chorando Se Foi, Lambada, on-vocal)

Now this is a song everyone has probably heard once, whether you knew the title or not. In this spin of Kaoma’s hit Lambada, in which Onne tested his ability to arrange the exotic once again, we decided to switch the lyrics’ language to Spanish (purely for skills reasons), and we changed the lyrics to pay homage to a natural phenomenon that had piqued Onne’s interest at the time: El Niño, a band of warm water going through the Pacific in a cycle, and among other things, regulating fishing activities for the locals. El Niño meaning ‘the child’, we decided to represent this current as a metaphorical child bringing warm water and being welcomes with open arms by his people waiting for him.

Point of No Return

When we were but a young band, we wouldn’t have thought to stick around for so long. In the back of our minds, we’re just having a great time playing the music we like. It feels almost like a million dreams ago when we did our first blow. Now, over fifty tunes later, we’re still going strong. It must be a point of no return, music seems to be a place where we belong. It used to be a blue world, filled with foolish things, yet somewhere along the way, we spread our wings. Day in, day out, we had our doubts, though if I may say, we’re here to stay. I’ll be seeing you!

Raven’s Jig – A Time for Us (on-vocal)

Fun fact : Agathe almost cried while singing the vocal arrange of this song. Our arrange of 1968 Romeo and Juliet’s A Time For Us, by Nino Rota, speaks not of love, but of the gap between a normal, peaceful life and a life full of adventure but also danger and a sense of deep loneliness. Is life really limited to one or the other? Our key image for this theme was that of an aviator, and the whole arrange and lyrics were inspired by a fascinating chat Onne got to have with an aviator prior to the project. That aviator inspired one of our most emotional pieces right here, which we are very grateful for.

Raven’s Jig – Jib Jig (off-vocal)

Of course, we are Raven’s Jig, so it only made sense that we would do a jig at some point, right? This orchestral arrange of a soundtrack from Donkey Kong Country 2 exists in two version, an off-vocal featuring extra harp and the greenery-filled flute we appreciate so much in our more celtic song, and a vocal version featuring a cute, simple story imagined by Onne, adapted into rhyming lyrics by Agathe. Boy, was that a mouthful to sing. Jigs are difficult… But so catchy and interesting!

Raven’s Jig – Leçon de Franglais

This is a spin on a song most likely best known by the French: ‘For Me, Formidable’ by Charles Aznavour. The original song features a pun-filled mix of French and English to which we decided to pay homage by writing our own lyrics… With possibly a more absurd twist, if that can every be. It is a downright playful, almost mocking song, which we have had fun working on.
